FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What is the correct way to grow and sow Wildflower Seed?

Answer - Start by cutting your grass down as short as possible and scarify the area. The grass sward needs to be as thin as possible, you need to be able to see through the grass.

When sowing Wildflower Seed it needs to be on bare soil, if the seed competes with grass this will decrease germination and the Wildflower will not come through as this will be smothered with the competing grass.

Dry sand can also be mixed with the Wildflower Seed as the Dry Sand is a carrier. Wildflower Seed wants to be sown at 5 grams per square metre on bare soil. Then lightly push the seed into the soil with feet, avoid raking or burying the the seed as this will prevent germination.

The Wildflower Seed wants to be on top of the surface and/or slightly buried with slight soil contact.

  • What does the 80:20 Wildflower option mean?

Answer - 80% means the amount of grass seed within the Wildflower Mix and 20% means the amount of Wildflower seed within the mix (sown at 5 gram per square metre). 100% mixes are available on our website which are best to be sown within Spring and Summer months.

  • What is the difference between Annual and Perennial Wildflower Mixes?

Answer - Annual plants germinate, bloom, set seed and die all in one year. Everything which lasts longer than two years is Perennial, which in practical terms usually means it grows and flowers for many years.

This is important in terms of value for money and that when you buy you know what you are getting. Annuals are often grown from seed to add colour in the summer month, and many bedding plants are treated as annuals because they will not survive our winters. Perennial's will last all year including winter months and will grow and be established all year round.

  • How do I prepare a small lawn?

  • I have yellow patches on my lawn. Can I rescue my lawn?

Answer - Yes, this is a very common problem, however your grass and lawn can still be rescued. You'll need lots of water to flush away the urine and you'll probably find that the grass will regrow. If the grass has gone to bare soil, and there is no grass there, again ensure that the area is flushed with water and over-seed with one of our selective lawn mixes. The best time to over-seed is in April and May when the ground temperature begins to increase. Ensure that the seed has soil contact and is lightly covered with soil.

  • How do I control weeds in my garden?

Answer - Weeds can be controlled through a selective herbicide treatment.

Alternatively, weed unwanted plants and grasses via the root by your hand, or by the utility of a knife or mechanical weed device/ apparatus

  • When is it best to carry out scarification and aeration?

Answer - Carry out scarification on dry soil after applying any moss treatment to reduce the build up of thatch and moss. March is also one of the best months to aerate and de-compact the lawn for better air circulation. The result in a firmer ground or lawn.

  • When is the best time to fertilise for moss control?
